Few days before our Daughter's First Birthday, we saw her first tooth popping up. I have heard people talking about "Pallu Kozhukattai Ceremony" on the appearence of the first tooth. I wanted to do it for our girl but I was not sure about the procedure and the variety of kozhukattai we had to prepare. I asked my Mother for the procedure but she simply said, "No, no it is not our custom".
I quickly browsed and found Pal Kozhukattai is prepared in some of the houses to celebrate the teething ceremony. I told my husband that I planned to make pal kozhukattai that evening for our Lil "S" teething ceremony, he said he heard from his friends that Pallu Kozhukattai is different from pal kozhukattai. Again I browsed through the net and found "Sweet Ammini Kozhukattai" is referred as "Pallu Kozhukattai" in most places.
As it is not a custom to have any teething ceremony in our house, I just prepared Sweet Ammini Kozhukattai and Salt Ammini Kozhukattai in one Friday evening and just performed a pooja for Lord Ganesha. We then made Lil "S" eat both sweet & salt ammini kozhukattai. She just enjoyed the taste.
Ingredients :
1. Rice Flour - 1 Cup
2. Jaggery - 3/4 Cup (Powdered)
3. Coconut - 1/2 Cup (Grated)
4. Cardamom Powder - 1/2 tsp
5. Salt - 1/4 tsp
Procedure :
1. Dry roast the rice flour and let it cool.
2. Combine rice flour, salt, cardamom powder and coconut. Keep aside.
3. Dissolve jaggery in 2 Cups of water. Strain and then boil in a thick bottomed pan.
4. When the jaggery syrup starts to boil and forms bubble, medium the flame. Then add the rice flour mixture slowly. Stir continously to avoid any lumps.
5. When the flour mixture absorbs all the water, switch off the stove.
6. Remove from stove and leave the dough to cool a little bit.
7. Grease palm with ghee and rollout the dough in to small balls.
8. Place in ghee greased idly plates. Steam cook for approximately 10 minutes or till kozhukattai is cooked.
9. Serve warm as evening snack.
